Short Caption:

Doolittle worked to advance the development of aviation fuels.

Description:

Frustrated by low pay and little opportunity for promotion, Doolittle resigned from the Army in 1930 and joined Shell Oil’s aviation department. He encouraged the development of 100-octane aviation fuel and represented the company in aviation speed events, flying such aircraft as Shell’s Travel Air Model R “Mystery Ship.”
