Thaden was winner of the 1929 transcontinental Women's Air Derby (the so-called "Powder Puff Derby"), one of the founders of the Ninety-Nines, and the first woman (with Blanche Noyes) to win the Bendix Trophy Race in 1936, flying from New York to Los Angeles in slightly less than fifteen hours.
