Short Caption:

Navy destroyers stationed along the route guided the Curtiss flying boats on their journey across the Atlantic.

Description:

In 1919, three Curtiss flying boats, NC-1, NC-3, and NC-4, attempted to make the first transatlantic flight eight years before Charles Lindbergh became famous for crossing the Atlantic nonstop and alone. The NC-4 successfully completed the five-leg flight in 24 days. Navy destroyers were stationed along the route to guide the airplanes on their journey through night, fog, and rough seas.
